Nassau, Bahamas — With more than 150,000 votes cast, Bonnier Corp.’s Caribbean Travel + Life magazine has listed Tortola, British Virgin Islands as the best island to live on.

The announcement came at the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association’s 30th annual Caribbean Marketplace on January 22-25 in Nassau, Bahamas.

The selection was made from the magazine readers’ favorites in its annual Best of the Caribbean special issue for March 2012.

However, the Cayman Islands edged out Aruba and the British Virgin Islands for the top-destination prize. Seven Mile Beach on Grand Cayman was picked as the best beach in the region, and the Cayman Islands also picked up several honorable mentions in multiple categories, including Best Snorkeling, Friendliest Destination and Best Beach Bar. Grand Cayman also had an honorable mention for the Best Family Hotel with an award presented to the Westin Casuarina Resort and Spa.

The editors of Caribbean Travel + Life have spent the past 25 years scouring the Caribbean to find the region’s best beaches, hotels, restaurants and attractions. Each year, Caribbean Travel + Life invites its readers to vote for their favorites in the annual Best of the Caribbean Readers’ Choice awards.

In the resort category for the second year in a row, Jade Mountain in St. Lucia has won for Best Romantic Resort and Best Luxury Resort. For the third time, Beaches Turks and Caicos won the Best All-Inclusive Resort category, and an honorable mention for Best Family Resort. The honor of Best Restaurant in the Caribbean was bestowed upon The Cliff in Barbados. Voted the Best Island to Live On was Tortola, BVI.

Caribbean Travel + Life publisher Sue Gilman says, “The response for the 2012 awards was overwhelming, with more than 10,000 registered voters and more than 150,000 individual votes cast.”
