London, 12 December 2018: The British Virgin Islands Tourist Board are delighted to announce their latest accolade as Charter Destination of the Year at The British Yachting Awards 2018. The inaugural ceremony was held at Royal Thames Yacht Club, Knightsbridge on Monday 11 December 2018.
This prestigious award highlights the significant restoration process undertaken by the British Virgin Islands (BVIs), following the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma in September 2017.
Indeed, the BVIs proved to be a popular choice with the panel for two reasons; the first being its recognition as one of the finest cruising grounds in the world, with its winning combination of consistent trade winds, iconic anchorages and islands - making it easy to passage plan; and secondly, the panel applauded the BVIs for their remarkable recovery since the devastating natural disaster.
Ginny Hawksley, Managing Consultant for The British Virgin Islands Tourist Board London Office commented, “We are thrilled to win this prestigious award – together with our travel partners, we have worked so hard to promote sailing in the BVIs over the last year and this is a true measurement of our success”.
The BVIs looks forward to keeping up the momentum and plans to ensure that sailing in the BVIs is very much on the map. Next year, The British Virgin Islands Tourism Board will be hosting a series of sailing dinners for the sailing community and attending Cowes Week and Southampton Boat Show 2019, to ensure that the UK public and the travel industry are very much front of mind.
