Aimed at potential investors and individuals seeking to grow their wealth and investment portfolio, the seminar was led by two inspiring international guest speakers. Mr. Ephren Taylor, the youngest African-American Chief Executive Officer of a publicly traded company, City Capital Corporation, a business development firm focusing on making loans and equity investments in developing business. He spoke about creating wealth through the strategic management of limited resources and youth entrepreneurship. The second speaker was Mr. Carl Young, an accomplished Chief Financial Officer, author and public speaker, focused on ideas for managing and maintaining family finances and formulating strategies for business success, improved productivity and profits.
Local speakers included Mr. Simon Potter of the BVI Investment Club who gave participants practical information on starting an investment club and Ms. Lizette George, Director of the Department of Trade and Consumer Affairs, who gave an insightful presentation on the purpose and function of the department. Mr. Russell Harrigan, Chairman and CEO of Oyster Marketing Group, parent company of Oyster Publications spoke briefly about the many untapped business opportunities in the BVI. Last week's seminar was sponsored by the Department of Trade and Consumer Affairs, Ocean Conversion, the BVI Investment Club and Jahphix Studios & Graphic Design.
Thirty-two students from St George's Secondary School, Cedar School, BVI High School and HLSCC had the opportunity to participate thanks to sponsorship by Nagico Insurance, Equity Trust and VP Bank.
“Oyster Publications will be organizing a total of three seminars in 2007.” said Mr Harrigan. Next on the seminar schedule is the July 4 session on Tourism Development and Hospitality Management. “This seminar will be an opportunity for us to take a look at the current developments in the BVI and the business and employment opportunities this brings with it.” Mr. Harrigan added, “It is our hope that this seminar will inspire attendees to take advantage of the many economic opportunities these developments will undoubtedly bring to our islands.” The final seminar in the 2007 series will be the Women of Power Summit, to be held on November 17. “This seminar will focus on the empowerment of women through spiritual and financial development. Guest speakers include internationally acclaimed motivational speaker and author of, “Acts of Faith” and “Tapping The Power Within”, Ms. Iyanla Vanzant, former Vice Mayor of Cincinnati, Ohio and motivational speaker Ms. Alicia Reece along with prominent women in our community.” Mr. Harrigan concluded.
